‘‘A weapon created by the Old Gods themselves; it has belonged to many great warriors and heroes.
It senses evil, and at a short distance will pull anything that it hates toward it.
Also key to traversing dimensions; its full powers are unknown. It always returns to the Black Labyrinth once the wielder is dead...’’

Axe of the Black Labyrinth is the starting weapon of Amid Evil. This is the only[1] melee weapon that doesn't require mana for use. It was obtained by the main protagonist after he completed the trials of the Black Labyrinth and gained his status as the Champion.

Description

Appearance

This is a double-edged dark-grey battle axe with a brown handle, pointy end, light-brown carving and a black magical gem on top that collects souls from fallen enemies.

Abilities

As stated in the description, Axe has the ability to pull enemies toward it with a chance of stunning them for a second. Activating soul power will make the Axe spin thrice as fast. Enemies' heads and limbs get cut off upon death.

Summary

Starting melee weapons in retro-fps games are often overlooked because the second you get a gun it becomes pointless to go in close combat. While that is true in some cases (I'm looking at you Quake), Amid Evil's Axe remains one of the most useful weapons throughout the whole game, even in later episodes. Not only does it stun enemies when you pull them toward you, but some of them even take triple damage from the weapon. Essentially, when there is a horde of small melee enemies - the Axe will cover your back and front.

Facts & trivia

  • In exchange for high spin rate soul-powered Axe loses its passive abilities (pulling enemies and increased damage against certain monsters).
    • Also works as a propeller underwater.
  • All enemies from the Void take triple damage from the Axe (excluding Night and the final boss).
